steam beats sunshine
Thermal springs · by airport · Oct–Apr

Greece is full of hot water. Winter is when it finally makes sense.

Sitting in 38°C water is a novelty in August and a religion in February. Here are 86 recognised springs across 21 airport gateways — some are proper spa towns with tickets and towels, some are free pools beside a road, and plenty exist mainly as a line in a government register. We say which is which.

Why cold weather is the point

The gradient is the whole experience.

A hot spring in July is something you endure for 10 minutes before getting out to cool down. A hot spring in January is the reason you drove 2 hours through rain. The pleasure is entirely in the difference: 6°C on your shoulders, 38°C everywhere else, steam lifting off the surface, and a mountain in the background doing absolutely nothing. Greece sits on more geothermal water than it has any idea what to do with — and between October and April, almost nobody is in it.

The complication is that "thermal spring" in Greece covers an enormous range. At one end sit Pozar, Loutraki, Lake Vouliagmeni and Loutra Ypatis: real facilities, with tickets, changing rooms, published hours and someone on duty. At the other end sits a borehole with a recognition number, no building, no attendant and no established right of entry. Both appear on the same official list. Only one of them is a day out.

Three kinds of hot water

Read every entry below through one of these three lenses before you commit a day to it.

Build a trip on these
Spa towns that actually run
Pozar, Loutraki, Lake Vouliagmeni, Thermae Sylla, Loutra Ypatis. Indoor pools, private baths, hydrotherapy, hours you can look up and a phone someone answers. These work in January, and they are the ones worth planning around.
Free, and it shows
Roadside and rock-pool soaks
Coastal seeps, river-mixed pools and open-air tanks where the facility is a rock and the changing room is your car. Superb when the weather cooperates. Cold, muddy and occasionally unsafe when it doesn't — and there is no one there to tell you either way.
Listed, not visitable
Recognised on paper only
A registered resource with no visitor product attached to it — a borehole, a capped source, a name on a state schedule. Included here because the register is the honest source, not because you can turn up and get in. Treat these as context, not destinations.
What to expect, honestly

Most entries below come from the state recognition register, which certifies the water — not the visit. A recognised resource may be a working spa, a concrete tank behind a fence, or a warm trickle into a stream. Assume nothing about changing rooms, hot showers, lighting, wheelchair access or winter staffing until you have confirmed it for your exact date, by phone, with the operator.

Practical rules for the rustic ones: bring your own towel and flip-flops everywhere, including the good places. Don't soak alone, don't get in after heavy rain has swollen a river pool, and keep your head out of the water — untreated hot springs and nasal passages are a genuinely bad combination. Sessions of 15–20 minutes with breaks, plenty of water, no alcohol. If a pool is signed as closed, it is closed for a reason that is usually microbiological.

What winter actually changes

In your favour: no queues, no summer coach parties, cheap midweek rooms in the spa towns, and water that finally feels like the point rather than an endurance test. Against you: mountain approaches to places like Pozar can take snow, island springs depend on ferries that reduce or cancel in wind, daylight runs out around 17:30, and several smaller municipal baths simply shut for the season without announcing it anywhere you'd find. Phone ahead the same week, and keep one indoor alternative in the back pocket.

Where to soak, by airport

Filter by region, then confirm before you drive.

Which springs hold state recognition comes from the Greek national health service's 2026 spa-therapy list — EOPYY recognised springs (PDF). Recognition is not proof that a facility is open, staffed or licensed for visits on your date; most of these springs have no website of their own, so confirm locally before travelling.

Springs range from organised spas to unstaffed roadside pools — facilities, temperatures and access change with the season. Always confirm conditions locally before you soak.
