Grevena, Smixi & Samarina

A winter base that earns the trip even on a no-lift day. Riders, nature travellers and active groups.

What it's actually like

This is the deep end of Greek winter. Vasilitsa sits in the northern Pindos on natural snow — no vast snowmaking safety net, just weather — and it has quietly become the freeride choice for riders who find the bigger centres too groomed. The bases split 3 ways: Grevena, a workaday town 42 km out with proper hotels; Smixi, the closest village to the lifts; and Samarina, a Vlach settlement among the highest villages in the Balkans, which half-hibernates until spring. Nobody here performs for visitors. A Saturday looks like woodsmoke, chained-up 4x4s and long lunches built around wild mushrooms — Grevena takes its fungi seriously enough to have built a modest cuisine on them.

Come in January or February, when the natural snowpack is most dependable, and stay 2 or 3 nights — this is not a place that rewards a dash. Sleep in Smixi if skiing is the point, Grevena if you want restaurants and fuel within walking distance. On the off day, hunt the region's Ottoman-era stone bridges or skirt the edge of Valia Calda, one of Greece's wildest corners — in winter you admire it from the margins, not the interior. The warning is non-negotiable: winter tyres or chains are essential, and you check road conditions before setting out, every time. The Pindos does not do token snowfall.
