How the open-o-meter works
Every destination gets a 1–5 rating for how alive it really is between November and March — not how pretty it is in summer. We weigh four things: whether the airport keeps year-round flights, how much of the town and its tavernas stay open, whether the sights and museums run winter hours, and how much genuine local life carries on.
It’s an editorial judgement, not a live feed — so treat it as a steer, not a guarantee, and always confirm specifics before you book.
●●●●●4–5 · Lively. A working town or city — most things open, plenty to do.
●●●○○3 · Quietly open. Lived-in and low-key; some places shut, enough stays.
●●○○○1–2 · Sleepy. A lifeline flight and solitude — come for the scenery, not the nightlife.

A note on honesty
If a place is half-shut in winter, we say so. We’d rather you trust the guide than sell you a shuttered island.
