Winter flights keep running, but the inter-island ferry web contracts hard — fewer sailings, more weather cancellations, the odd route that simply stops. Island-hopping stops being casual. Half the tavernas pull the shutters
On the quieter islands, plenty of restaurants, bars and hotels simply close until Easter. What stays open is the stuff locals actually use — so you eat where they eat, at winter prices, with the tourist menu mercifully in storage. Choice narrows; quality, oddly, tends not to.
Empty is the whole point
Get the match right and a small island in January is one of the last genuinely quiet places in Europe — a harbour to yourself, a beach with your footprints and nobody else's, a cafe owner who remembers your order by the second morning. That's not a consolation prize. It's the reason to come.
