Five-Day Winter Itineraries in Greece

Five days allow Greece to reveal its scale—but only if the itinerary uses gateways intelligently and resists changing hotels every evening. With five days, you can connect a city to a major cultural landscape, settle into a mountain region or explore one part of an island beyond its summer identity. The ideal structure uses two bases, occasionally three. Each of the following routes has a different personality…

The route

Day 1

Athens: arrival and the historic centre

Settle centrally and walk the historic core. Use the Acropolis Museum or another major indoor site if arrival time is uncertain. Eat near the hotel and protect the next morning.
Day 2

Athens: Acropolis and modern neighbourhoods

Visit the Acropolis early, then connect the ancient landscape on foot. After lunch, choose one museum or neighbourhood. The evening should belong to modern Athens—food, music, performance or design—not another rushed monument.
Day 3

Delphi and Arachova

Travel to Delphi early. Visit the sanctuary and museum before winter closing time, then continue to Arachova or remain in Delphi. Arachova offers a livelier resort atmosphere; Delphi offers quiet and views. Drivers can add a short stop…
Day 4

Meteora

Continue to Kalambaka or Kastraki. Visit a limited number of monasteries based on the current rotation of opening days. Dress respectfully and expect steps. Sunset viewpoints can be magnificent, but stopping and walking near roads…
Day 5

Return or continue north

Return to Athens or travel onward to Thessaloniki if the transport plan is confirmed. A fifth-day departure works only when the connection leaves margin for delays. If using rail, check Hellenic Train’s live information and service…
Day 1

Ioannina

Explore the castle, lakefront and museums. Use dinner as an introduction to Epirus: pies, cheeses, greens, mushrooms and local wines or spirits.
Day 2

Zagori’s stone villages

Move to a village base for two nights. Choose central Zagori for bridges, Monodendri and viewpoints, or western Zagori for Aristi and Papigo. Stop often and drive conservatively.
Day 3

A full mountain day

Select the day according to conditions: a guided hike, stone-bridge circuit, cooking experience, village-to-village walk or simply a slow route through architecture and landscape. Winter is not the season to improvise a technical hike…
