In the centre of Athens, settling snow is unusual. The city's winter is mild — typical daytime highs around 14°C — and most winters pass without a flake on the Acropolis. But not all of them. Every few years a cold spell from the north brings real snow to the whole basin: Storm Medea covered the city in February 2021, and Storm Elpis brought it back in January 2022, stranding drivers on the Attiki Odos motorway.
Where the snow actually is
The mountains ringing the city see snow far more often than the centre. Parnitha to the north, and Penteli and Hymettus to the east, regularly turn white in a cold spell — which makes for Athens' best winter view: a sunny, snow-free city under white peaks.
Skiing from Athens
For reliable snow, head for Parnassos, the country's largest ski centre, about two and a half hours by road. Stay in Arachova or Delphi and it becomes a weekend: skiing when the lifts run, and the archaeological site of Delphi when the wind shuts them. Kalavryta and Ziria in the Peloponnese are the other ski centres within a few hours of the city.
When is it most likely?
If it snows in Athens, it is almost always between late December and February, during a spell of cold northerly winds. It rarely lasts — usually gone within a day or two, with the sun back as though nothing happened. Nobody can promise it: plan a winter trip to Athens for the empty museums and the mild days, and count snow as a bonus.
