What it's actually like
Arcadia trades on a myth of pastoral bliss, and for once the marketing is 2,000 years old rather than 2. In winter the Mainalo firs close in around a string of stone villages — Vytina with its honey and its long-standing high street, Dimitsana stacked above the Lousios gorge — and the small ski centre 12 km from Vytina supplies the snow portion of the weekend. Be clear about proportions: Mainalo is a friendly hill with a snowboard park, short runs and snowmobiles, not a resort you cross a country for. The villages are the destination — Athenians have known it for generations, which is why Saturday nights smell of woodsmoke and slow-cooked everything, and why fireplaces comfortably outnumber lift towers.
Base in Vytina or Dimitsana for 2 nights and resist the urge to over-schedule. One real move: walk a stage of the Menalon Trail — the stretch above the Lousios gorge passes monasteries bolted straight onto the cliff face, and a winter morning there, all mist and bells, embarrasses most ski days. Dimitsana's open-air water-power museum explains how this quiet gorge once armed a revolution with gunpowder. Ski Mainalo if the cover cooperates, and treat it as a bonus rather than the point. The catch is popularity: Arcadia is Athens's favourite winter set-piece, so weekend guesthouses fill early and the good tables go with them. Come midweek and the villages return to their preferred century.
