Palaios Agios Athanasios & Edessa

A winter base that earns the trip even on a no-lift day. Couples, groups and wellness-plus-ski breaks.

What it's actually like

Palaios Agios Athanasios is the closest northern Greece gets to a set-piece winter village — a preserved stone settlement below Mount Voras, restored guesthouse by guesthouse into fireplaces, slow breakfasts and serious dinners. Above it, Kaimaktsalan works some of the highest lift-served terrain in Greece, up where the border ridge meets the weather. The clientele is couples and groups, mostly from Thessaloniki, who want atmosphere with their altitude; Saturday evening is wine, woodsmoke and a slow procession of headlights coming down from the mountain. Edessa, 35 km below, is the practical alternative base — a real working town, famous for the waterfalls that pour straight off its edge.

The move to copy: ski, then drop to the Pozar thermal baths and let the warm spring water undo the day — the open-air pools in the gorge are the region's great equaliser, crowded on Saturday nights and close to perfect on weekday mornings. Give it 2 nights in the village, with Edessa's waterfalls or Lake Vegoritida filling the gaps and a winery stop on the way home. The caveat sits at the top of the mountain: Voras is exposed, and the upper lifts close in strong wind more often than anyone advertises. Check the resort bulletin the morning you drive up, and hold Pozar as the consolation prize. It barely feels like losing.
