Naousa, Seli & Vermio

A winter base that earns the trip even on a no-lift day. Families, wine travellers and ski clubs.

What it's actually like

Vermio carries 2 ski centres and a long memory — organised Greek skiing effectively began at Seli in the 1930s, and the racing clubs never left, while 3–5 Pigadia across the massif adds snowmaking and steeper training slopes. The region's real gravity, though, is lower down in Naousa, one of Greece's great red-wine towns. This is Xinomavro country — the grape people argue over the way others argue over Burgundy — and winter is exactly when its tannins and the local cooking make sense of each other. A Saturday can mean race bibs and gates on the mountain in the morning and a cellar-door tasting by mid-afternoon, a combination the Alps rarely manage with so little ceremony.

Treat the 2 centres as one flexible lift ticket: check the morning reports and drive to whichever has better cover, because Vermio is honest natural-snow country and neither centre pretends otherwise. Budget 2 nights, and do not skip Vergina — the royal tombs of Aigai, where Philip II of Macedon was buried beneath his mound, sit half an hour away and are genuinely world-class; the underground museum quietly rearranges your sense of what old means. Veria's riverside old quarter covers the last half-day. The warning is the obvious one: in a thin winter the skiing can be marginal or paused entirely, so come for wine-plus-snow rather than snow alone and you cannot really lose.
