Drama, Volakas & Nevrokopi

A winter base that earns the trip even on a no-lift day. Experienced skiers, groups and regional road trips.

What it's actually like

Falakro means bald mountain, which undersells a serious northern ski area with competition-grade terrain and, by Greek standards, a long season. What makes the destination pleasingly odd is the base arrangement. Drama, 45 km away, is a small wine city that turns into Greece's unofficial Christmas capital each December, when the Oneiroupoli festival takes over its park. Volakas, much nearer the lifts, is a stone village that has kept its architecture and its quiet. And Nevrokopi, between the two, is reliably the coldest inhabited place in Greece — a distinction the locals wear with frostbitten pride. You come to this corner for real winter, not the postcard edition.

For once we will tell you to favour the weekend — Falakro has historically run a limited weekday programme outside peak periods, so confirm operating days before committing, and treat the access road with respect after fresh snow. Sleep in Drama for restaurants, wine bars and the December festival on your doorstep; sleep in Volakas to be first up the mountain. The non-ski day sorts itself: the underground river of the Aggitis Cave, then an afternoon along the Drama wine route, whose cellars have earned a national reputation. In December add the Christmas park — and accept that you will queue behind several thousand delighted children.
